The Iowa Watercolor Society, Iowa’s Preeminent Nonprofit Association for
Iowa’s Watercolor Artists of All Skill Levels
Who we are...
The Iowa Watercolor Society (IWS) was organized in 1977 by a small group of enthusiastic watercolorists, which means we are over forty years old! IWS now celebrates well over 150 members and offers the opportunity for watercolorists of all skill levels to network with artists statewide. Each fall, the IWS sponsors an annual luncheon, exhibition, awards ceremony, and workshop. Ours is a juried exhibition with monetary awards. The IWS accepts entries in water media on watercolor paper and members may submit two paintings for consideration — without entry fees. From the annual exhibition, a traveling show is created and provides outreach around the state. The well-attended and fun-filled three-day workshops, held three days prior to, and three days following, the annual meeting are taught by nationally and internationally recognized teachers. Recent instructors include:Janet Rogers, Anne Abbgot Sterling Edwards, Iain Stewart, Stephen Quiller, Alvaro Castagnet, Don Andrews, Paul Jackson and Carol Carter.
Why should I join?
Beginners, amateurs, seasoned professionals, or just interested observers all find a home with the Iowa Watercolor Society. As a member, you will learn tips about art, watercolor painting, and how to prepare for juried shows. You will receive at least two newsletters a year, periodic e-mails with announcements, a membership directory, the Annual Exhibit Call for Entries, as well as the Exhibition Booklet. The IWS workshops bring together watercolor artists of all levels who have the common goal of improving their art. The enthusiastic, hands-on instruction gives everyone the desire to: Paint boldly! Take a risk! Step back and see what happens!
How can I get involved?
One of the advantages of membership in an art society is the opportunity to learn by volunteering, and enjoy the satisfaction of helping others.
